Log Home Inspection
Doing a log home inspection whether you do it yourself or if you hire someone to do it is a key part of owning a log home. An inspection should be done at least once a year, preferably doing it in the spring of the year rather than the fall.
This way if you find any repair or maintenance issues you have the summer to work on them. If you don't want to work on them yourself this will also leave you time to contact a log home maintenance contractor.
If you don't know any contractors that do maintenance work on log homes we can refer you to
CANNON CHINKING.
Cannon Chinking is a log home maintenance company that is affiliated with Log Home Repair Supplies. They specialize in repair and maintenance work on log homes and is also available for doing inspections.
When you are doing a log home inspection you need to look at every possible area where there might be signs of deterioration. It probably would be a good idea to go around your home at least twice when doing the inspection. On the second time around I'm sure you will find somethings you missed the first time.
What you need to be looking at closely are the stain, any sealants used (caulking or chinking), signs of log rot and mold or mildew. If the joints are not caulked or chinked then you need to be looking at them closely to see if there are any gaps.
While doing your log home inspection you need to also be looking for any CHECKS (cracks in logs)that might be needing sealed. Another area to keep an eye out for is for any signs of wood ingesting insects being at work.
All of the above areas are discussed in their sections of our site. They are listed below, just click on any that you are interested in.
While you are doing an inspection you should be writting down notes as you go around your home. When you are done the notes will tell you what you have found (if anything) and where you found it.
This is what Cannon Chinking does when it is doing an inspection. That way they can look at their notes and figure out what types of products they are going to need for the maintenance or repair work.
REMEMBER the first step in keeping your log home in proper condition is doing an inspection.
